New Data Show Child Mortality Rates Falling Faster Than Ever

New data released by the United Nations show that under-five mortality rates have dropped by 49% between 1990 and 2013. The average annual reduction has accelerated – in some countries it has even tripled – but overall progress is still short of meeting the global target of a two-thirds decrease in under-five mortality by 2015. Success Factors for Women’s and Children’s Health

According to a new series of studies, Success Factors for Women’s and Children’s Health, ten low- and middle-income countries have been highly successful in reducing maternal and child mortality, and in making good progress on sexual and reproductive health. The studies call these 10 nations “fast-track” countries and explores why and how some of the poorest countries in the world successfully protect their mothers, newborns and young children. The purpose of this briefing was to update Missions from UN Member States on global progress on the health MDGs, in particular women’s and children’s health and the Secretary-General’s high-level Every Woman Every Child event on September 25. United Nations Secretary-General Appoints Independent Expert Advisory Group on the Data Revolution for Sustainable Development

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced the establishment of an Independent Expert Advisory Group on the Data Revolution for Sustainable Development. The Group will advise the Secretary-General on measures required to close the data gaps and strengthen national statistical capacities. To learn more click here
